Taking in boarders is also an idea that is common in Europe and was also done in the US, particularly throughout the depression when people needed a room to stay in cheap and homeowners needed the extra income of a renter. The ideal situation is to use a room with a separate door to the outside that they can use to come and go in private. The bathroom they use should also be separate for best results. If you really need the income to make ends meet until the house sells, you might be willing to give up your master bedroom complete with private bath. Put a small microwave, a mini-fridge, and a small table and chairs in the room and it becomes a studio apartment.

These are just two ideas for how to use your home to make you some money while it is on the market. It could take some time to get the house sold, so do what you can to keep up the payments until the new owners relieve you of your burden.
